When you own a business, one of the most important decisions you will make is the staff that you employ. You want employees that will be charming and polite to the customer whilst being organized, sensible and tough when it comes to anyone damaging the business. You want them to be able to respect you as their boss, and respect the company they are working for in return for their wages. For the majority of the time, business owners have fairly good intuition and can spot a rogue applicant among the CVs they read and interviews they hold. However, you will find that some slippery snakes get through to the shop floor the day will come when you spot them with their hand in the cash register till.
You might catch a member of staff physically stealing money from your business, it might be caught through your accounts when you realise that your takings have been down over a period of time or in a systematic way, or you might be carrying out an on-the-spot bag check and find some of your products on one of the employee's bag. However, just because you have discovered that a staff member is a thief does not mean that you know which member of staff is actually committing the crime.
To help you discover who is behind the stealing, your cash register till can help you in your investigation. If you have a modern till which is part of an electronic point of sale or EPoS system, you should be able to track each and every sale made by individual employees. This works through an identification process which the cash register till performs each time a transaction is put through. The cashier will be required to enter a pin number, use a key or insert a toggle so that they can continue with the sale. This logs their name with each transaction.
You can then learn which till the takings are down in and who has been working on the till, all of which helps with your investigation. Many tills now have an automated float collection which disables the sales mechanism until the float is removed. This can pin point the time of the theft to during the working day or as the sales are counted. If money has gone missing during two float removals then you can see who has made transactions during that time. On the other hand, if the money is taken during the final cashing up of the day, the identification system allows you to see who was in charge of the process.
By working out the one common link between all of these events you can easily discover which staff member is behind the theft and take disciplinary action.
